What goes into manufacturing a pool table in Vietnam, which materials are used and how does it meet competition standards? The full process, from timber frame and slate to levelling.

Pool table manufacturing in Vietnam: process, materials and quality standards

Pool table manufacturing in Vietnam has come a long way: from joinery workshops assembling tables to imported designs, to manufacturers that control the entire process, from frame and slate to levelling and export. This article walks through each stage, the materials that determine quality and the standards a competition-grade table has to meet.

Why are more and more brands choosing to manufacture pool tables in Vietnam?

Vietnam has three clear advantages for the pool table industry. First, a long-established wood-processing and furniture base, with craftsmen experienced in detailed machining and surface finishing. Second, a convenient component supply chain: slate, cushion rubber and cloth can be imported to the exact specification of each order. Third, a network of seaports and free trade agreements that lets goods ship directly to many markets.

For domestic buyers, locally made tables also offer advantages in warranty, replacement parts and delivery times – things that fully imported tables struggle to guarantee.

The main components of a pool table

  • Frame and legs: carry the full weight of the slate and determine long-term stability. They can be solid timber, steel with a timber core, or all steel.
  • Slate: the playing surface, usually natural slate split into 3 pieces for easier transport and levelling.
  • Rails and cushion rubber: determine how the ball rebounds and how accurately it comes off the cushion.
  • Cloth: affects the speed of the roll and how the ball takes spin.
  • Corner castings, pocket baskets, diamond sights: details that are both decorative and protect the table under heavy use.

The pool table manufacturing process: 6 main stages

1. Preparing and treating materials

Timber is kiln-dried to a stable moisture content before machining, because damp wood shrinks and warps after assembly. Steel for the frame is cut, bent and rust-proofed. Slate, cushion rubber and cloth are checked for type and appearance when they arrive in the warehouse.

2. Machining the frame, legs and rails

Parts are cut, milled and drilled to the drawings. In a steel frame with a timber core, the steel provides rigidity while the timber core damps vibration and holds screws securely. Rails need anti-warp treatment because they are long parts that take constant impacts.

3. Painting and surface finishing

Timber surfaces are sanded, primed and given several top coats. Some table lines use a laminate finish that resists fingerprints and cigarette burns, ideal for clubs that run around the clock. Steel-leg tables can use powder coating or fluorocarbon paint for extra durability.

4. Machining and grinding the slate

The slate is cut to the table size, drilled for fixings and ground flat. This is the stage that decides whether the ball rolls true, so flatness tolerances must be tightly controlled.

5. Assembly and clothing

The frame, legs, slate and rails are fully assembled. The slate is levelled using the adjustment points under the frame, then the cloth is stretched and the cushion rubber fitted.

6. Levelling, inspection and packing

The finished table is checked for flatness, cushion rebound and pocket size before being dismantled and packed. The slate is always crated separately to prevent cracking in transit.

The materials that determine table quality

Two tables that look alike can play very differently, and the difference usually lies in the materials inside:

  • Slate: natural slate 25–35mm thick offers far better flatness and stability than a wooden or artificial stone bed. See our article on pool table slate.
  • Cushion rubber: quality rubber stays elastic for years, while poor rubber hardens quickly and makes the ball rebound inaccurately.
  • Frame: a sufficiently rigid frame keeps the slate from sagging over time, especially on a 9ft table with its very heavy slate.

For example, Athena tables use a natural blue-black slate 25–30mm thick depending on the model. The Legend and Titan lines use a three-piece slate, a 6mm steel frame with a timber core and slate-levelling points, Premier Black cushion rubber and four independent legs whose height adjusts to the floor.

What does a competition-standard table need to meet?

The most widely referenced standard for pool tables is the equipment specification of the WPA (World Pool-Billiard Association). Key points for a 9ft table:

  • Playing surface of 254 × 127 cm (100 × 50 inches).
  • Slate at least 1 inch (about 2.54 cm) thick.
  • Height from the floor to the top of the rail between 74.3 and 78.7 cm.
  • Corner and side pocket openings within the specified range.

Every dimension is covered in our article on standard pool table dimensions.

How to evaluate a pool table manufacturer

Before placing a large order or commissioning tables under your own brand, ask the manufacturer where their slate and cushion rubber come from, how they manage timber moisture, how they pack the slate and what their replacement parts policy is. If possible, inspect a sample table in person rather than just looking at photos. Our article on pool table factories includes a detailed checklist.

Frequently asked questions

Do pool tables made in Vietnam meet competition standards?

Yes – provided the right materials are used and the dimensions, slate flatness and cushion rebound are controlled to WPA specifications. Where a table is made does not determine its quality; the process and materials do.

Should I choose a timber frame or a steel frame?

A solid timber frame gives a traditional, solid feel. A steel or timber-cored steel frame is more stable under a heavy slate and less affected by humidity, making it better suited to clubs that run many hours a day.
