Choosing a pool table factory is a decision that shapes years of business. Here are 8 criteria to check before you sign a contract.
For club owners, distributors and brands that want a table line of their own, choosing the right pool table factory matters more than choosing the right table design. A good-looking design can be copied, but consistent quality across hundreds of tables only comes from a factory with a sound process. Here are 8 criteria to check before you place an order.
1. Which stages does the factory control?
Ask clearly which stages the factory does in-house and which it outsources. The quality-critical stages are timber treatment, frame machining, slate grinding, paint finishing and levelling. The less these depend on third parties, the easier quality is to control.
2. Are material sources transparent?
A serious factory will tell you exactly where its slate comes from and how thick it is, what cushion rubber it uses and which brand of cloth. Vague answers are a warning sign. Natural slate 25mm or thicker, branded cushion rubber and cloth with a clear product code are all worth insisting on. See also: pool table slate.
3. Timber moisture control
Timber that has not been dried properly shrinks after assembly, opening up joints, warping rails and throwing the bed out of flat. Ask the factory about its drying process, its moisture meters and the moisture threshold it accepts before timber goes into production.
4. A documented quality control process
Good quality control usually has several layers: incoming material inspection, in-line inspection and final inspection before packing. More important than the list of steps is the evidence: measurement records, photos, and flatness and cushion-rebound data for each batch. International buyers often also hire an independent inspection company before loading.
5. Are samples made on the actual production line?
A sample handmade by the best craftsman can look better than mass production. Ask for the sample to be built on the same line that will run your order, with an inspection report, so it reflects the quality you will actually receive.
6. OEM / ODM customisation capability
If you want tables under your own brand, check what the factory can do: engraved or printed logos, custom timber and cloth colours, different leg styles, branded packaging, or a completely new design. Our article on OEM / ODM pool table manufacturing explains the difference between the two models.
7. Packing and export experience
The slate is the part most easily damaged in transit. An experienced factory crates the slate separately in timber, with foam padding and corner protectors, and uses ISPM 15-treated wooden pallets for overseas shipments. Ask how many tables fit in each container and which documents they can provide. Details in our article on exporting pool tables.
8. Warranty and replacement parts
A pool table is used for many years, so after-sales support matters as much as price. Ask about the warranty period for each component, the policy on shipping spare parts and the technical support available for installations far away.
Visit the factory before you order
Nothing replaces a visit in person: see the timber store, the slate-grinding area, the paint shop and tables being assembled. If you cannot go, ask for a video call walking through the workshop and photos of each stage of your own order.
Frequently asked questions
Is ordering from the factory cheaper than buying through a dealer?
Large-volume or private-label orders usually go directly through the factory to optimise price and customisation. For a single order of a few tables, buying through a dealer is more convenient, with stock on hand, delivery and on-site installation.
How can I check quality if I cannot be there?
Ask for progress reports with photos and an inspection report for the batch, and hire an independent inspection company to check the goods before the container is loaded.
